Honestly, when we lived in California, I didn’t even know this big senior pictures modeling experience was a “thing”. We just went to the school, lined up, put on a drape and had a head shot taken. Then we moved to North Dakota and I started being asked to do senior pictures. I had to ask what they were talking about….I learned really fast and had a blast doing it! And now senior pictures are one of my favorite types of photo sessions!
So, why are senior pictures so popular?
1. Senior pictures are a tradition dating all the way back to World War II, and according to Wikipedia, possibly all the way back to 1880! Of course, the styles have obviously changed and have moved from a stiff formal head shot, to the weird drapey thing of the 80s and now to very personal and stylized photos. Even the head shots are more personal, fun and show personality! Be a part of American Tradition!
2. This is a fleeting time between being a teen and being an adult. For many seniors this is a time of milestones and its worth documenting. For parents a senior session is about capturing this kind of miraculous time when their teenager still has some of that childhood innocence and yet is clearly on the brink of an exciting independent future.
3. For the senior, this is a bit of a time of “lasts”…the last year of high school, perhaps the last year you are with many of your childhood friends, the last year of living under your parent’s roof as a child (you may come back and live in the basement, but it still will not be the same, LOL), or the last season of your athletic teams, band, academic clubs, etc. Your life will change drastically and this is the perfect time to capture your life as it is right now so it is never forgotten.
4. They are used in a multitude of ways: yearbook, scholarship applications, job applications, graduation announcements, newspaper announcements, keepsakes and gifts. I have heard that the senior picture used in the yearbook is often pulled years later for newspapers and scholarship applications when requested from schools. It sure would be nice if it was a good one!
Whatever the reason, senior pictures surely have become a tradition and a way to mark and remember a monumental milestone in your life!
