“I’m not sure yet” – surprisingly, the most common answer to the question, “Are you wearing a veil”. But, honestly, I shouldn’t be surprised. There are no rules anymore regarding what is appropriate for bridal wear. It’s all up to a woman’s personal style and there are just so many options available now: from the full length cathedral veil, to a little fascinator, gorgeous headpieces and even no adornment at all. So should you wear a wedding veil? It is all up to the you and your vision for yourself!
This past wedding season, all my brides wore headpieces and viels, though they each chose to do so in different ways. One chose not to wear her veil for first look or pre-ceremony photos. Her groom saw her for the first time in full bridal splendor walking down the aisle! Others wore their veils for photos and the ceremony, but took them off for the reception. Here’s a little look back at some of these stunning brides. If you scroll further down, you will find some additional examples of beautiful veils, headpiece and jewelry by JL Johnson Bridal Viels.

The bridal veil may be thought of just as an accessory. It’s pretty but a not big thing. Many brides think of it as old fashioned and don’t put it high on their priority list of “must haves” for their wedding. True, it is not a necessity and for some it just doesn’t feel like the right fit, but don’t underestimate the power of the veil.
A little history on the wedding veil
The bridal veil originated as a way to hide the bride from evil spirits (ancient Greeks and Romans). Interestingly, the tradition of the father walking his daughter down the aisle derives from the fact that the bride needed him to keep her from tripping or bumping into anything as her vision was obscured by the veil. As time marched on and wedding ceremonies became more religious, the veil was used to symbolize modesty and chastity. See more about the history and evolution of the bridal veil weddingideasmag.com. Now the veils come in styles that vary as widely as the gown itself!
I have photographed brides with and without veils and each and every one of them was gorgeous in her own unique way. Thankfully all the stuffy rules of wedding “do’s and don’ts” don’t really apply anymore. Brides are free to create the wedding of their dreams without old fashioned restrictions.
I have had the unique opportunity to work with JL Johnson Bridal Veils for two years, helping them create the photos for their website and catalogue. The studio was filled with utterly gorgeous veils, head pieces, jewelry and accessories. I don’t know how brides ever choose, when each one seemed more beautiful than the next!
3 Things to consider:
If you are a bride considering whether or not to wear a veil, here are few ideas that might just sway you to the “pro veil” side!
- Many brides say they didn’t get that “bridal” feel until they dawned the veil! It was the final touch that transformed a dress into a wedding gown and the girl into a bride!
- The veil is such an iconic piece, that it really can’t be worn for anything but a wedding. This is your opportunity to rock that veil, so its worth serious consideration!
- The veil makes for super pretty pictures! The veil blowing in the wind, the bride and groom laughing underneath it, the edge of lace cascading down the brides arm…oh, the possibilities are endless!
