Family photos tell stories. We all take tons of photos of our families throughout the year – playful ones of the kids, the first day of school, spaghetti face in the highchair, prom, sporting events and, of course, an attempt at a formal one for the annual Christmas card. One picture is just a slice of life, but the whole collection of pictures starts to show a story of the family itself.
As a photographer for many years now, and as a mom, I appreciate all types of photography, from the candid fun shots to the formally posed family portrait. Looking back on vintage family photos is fun and gives us a glimpse into the past. I notice the posing, the expressions (some of those really old ones are sooooo serious) and the overall surroundings and backgrounds. These old photos become treasured family heirlooms. And we continue to add to our family’s history, showing how we have grown and changed and how we interact with one another…
bringing us to the family portraits of today. There are so many choices for professional family photos – in the studio you can choose from a formal grouping, a contemporary playful sitting, and a variety of backgrounds. In North Dakota, especially, a variety of indoor options is appealing because of our crazy weather. Outdoors we have choices from the family farm, parks and other scenic areas that may be important to your family. And again, outdoor portraits can range between formal to playful.
So many times I have heard (ugh, and have heard myself say it), that “it has been forever since our last family photo”. Don’t let the time slip by. These photos will always be treasured – now and in the future. Someday, you will sit around the old family album and reminisce and enjoy all the memories these photos will bring back…..
